Spring refresh

How to Refresh a Living Room Without Starting Over

Spring does something to people. We crave renewal and something fresh, like a fresh bud ready to flower. We suddenly look at our surroundings with fresh eyes. Often, this is when the couch looks tired and the rug looks dated. It can feel like you need to do more than spring cleaning, it can feel like taking a match to the whole ensemble. But fear not, there are many ways to accomplish a spring refresh, read more below.

Every May, we get the same conversation on the showroom floor. Someone walks in, points at a picture on their phone, and says some version of, I do not know what to do with this room anymore.

Nine times out of ten, they do not actually need to redo it. They need to refresh it. There is a real difference, and the difference is usually several thousand dollars.

1. Reupholster the piece you already love

If the bones are good, the fabric is the problem. A well-built sofa will outlast three sets of upholstery. Our Smith Brothers of Berne line is built this way on purpose. You can reupholster a Smith Brothers sofa in a new fabric from their library and get another decade out of it.

We keep more than 100 fabrics in the showroom so you can touch them before you choose. That matters more than people expect. A fabric that looks warm online can feel scratchy in person, and a fabric that looks flat on a phone can feel like the right answer the second you put your hand on it.

2. Swap the accessories

The cheapest refresh in any room is the one most people skip. New wall art, a new lamp, new throw pillows, a different rug. None of it requires moving furniture. All of it changes the feel of the room.

We carry Stylecraft, Sagebrook, Coast to Coast, Powell, and others specifically for this reason. An afternoon and a few well-chosen pieces will do more than you think.

3. Add one anchor piece

Not a new sofa. A new something. A recliner in a corner that is currently empty. An accent chair that finally gives Mom her own seat. A proper coffee table in a room that has been making do with an ottoman for five years.

One well-chosen piece can reorganize how a room feels to walk into. It is also a much easier decision than replacing a whole seating set.

4. Do the floor

This is the one people forget. Carpet, vinyl, and hardwood set the whole foundation of a room, and spring is the right season to deal with it. We carry Shaw Industries flooring with samples right in the showroom, which means you can see how a carpet is going to live in your space next to actual furniture, not under catalog lighting.

If your living room refresh is really a floor problem pretending to be a furniture problem, it is worth finding out before you replace the couch.

5. Change the light

Lighting is the most underrated move on this list. A single new lamp in the right corner can change how a room reads at 7 p.m. Add a pair, and the room stops feeling like a waiting area.

Come browse the lamp section. It is an easy win.

One thing we are not going to tell you to do

We are not going to tell you to throw everything out and buy a full room set. That is not how most people actually live, and it is not how we sell. If you need that, we can absolutely help. If you do not, we will be honest with you about it.

That is what the no-commission, no-haggle thing actually means in practice. Nobody on our floor benefits from making you buy more than you need.

Bring us a photo

The best way to start any refresh is to walk in with a photo of the room as it is today. We will tell you what we would change first, second, and third. Some of that might be new furniture. Some of it might be a lamp and a rug. Either way, you will leave with a plan.

We are on N. Saginaw Street in Holly. No appointment needed.
